Letters to Rufus King [photocopies], 1797-1805.

A group of letters written by Joseph Allen Smith to Rufus King. Smith traveled through England, Ireland, France, Denmark, Russia (including Astrakhan), Persia, and Turkey. King was, for most of this time, the American minister to Great Britain. In one letter, Smith discusses the "Troubles" in Ireland. In another, he mentions Victor du Pont. While traveling through Europe, he reports on the places he visited. In several letters, he discusses the Russians' campaign in the Caucasus or Persia in 1804. Smith mentions politics several times. There is also one letter from William Loughton Smith of Philadelphia, referring to his brother's belief in the story about his capture.

Rufus King (March 24, 1755 – April 29, 1827) was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat. He was a delegate for Massachusetts to the Continental Congress and the Philadelphia Convention and was one of the signers of the United States Constitution in 1787. After formation of the new Congress he represented New York in the United States Senate. Charleston, S.C. attorney, plantation owner, South Carolina state representative, U.S. representative, and U.S. diplomat. Smith used his wealth to subscribe nearly $12,000 of the state debt due to the Revolution. He was president (1808) of the Santee Canal Co. and invested heavily in it and other canal projects.
